Production Overview
Each week four separate weekly news editions are produced covering the Farnham, Alton, Fleet and Haslemere areas and on the first Monday of the month a monthly magazine is recorded. A recording normally runs for 78 minutes (the maximum time for a CD recording) to allow time for the later dubbing of the opening and closing music.

The production team for each of the weekly news editions comprises a presenter, three readers and a recording engineer and for the monthly magazine a presenter, two readers and a recording engineer.  The presenters are responsible to the programme director for the quality of the editing and reading standards.

Prior to each recording the presenter and readers edit the local newspapers to select the most interesting stories and to trim down the size of the stories to enable more to be read during the recording time available.

The recording engineer is responsible to the technical director for the technical quality of the recording.  After the recording session the recording engineer edits the recording to remove any 'fluffs' and reading errors and dubs on the opening and closing music.  He/she then creates the tracks and writes the recording to a master CD and to the required number of USB memory sticks.

Following the completion of the recording  production assistants are responsible for the copying of the master CD and inserting the copied CDs and USB memory sticks into mailing wallets ready for despatch. Prior to despatch the mailing wallet address label barcodes are scanned to record  the issue sent to the listener.

Monthly Magazine
In addition to the weekly news recording each listener also receives a monthly magazine which is normally recorded on the first Monday of each month.

The magazine includes longer feature articles from the weekly newspapers and stories from local magazines which are felt to be of special interest.  Each month we include an interview with a local personality whom we think will be of interest to our listeners.   The material for the magazine recording is normally selected by the presenter prior to the recording and then he or she is joined by two readers and a recording engineer for the recording session.

The magazine is edited and copied in the same way as the weekly news recordings to both CD and USB memory stick.  Each USB memory stick normally contains both the magazine and the news recordings.

Distribution
Currently the Fleet edition is edited and recorded on a Tuesday and despatched by Royal Mail on a Wednesday and should be received by the listeners on the Thursday of that week.

The Farnham and Haslemere editions are edited and recorded on a Thursday and despatched by Royal Mail on the Friday afternoon.  The Alton edition is edited on a Thursday afternoon and recorded on the Friday morning for despatch by Royal Mail on the Friday afternoon.

Normally the Farnham, Haslemere and Alton editions should be received by the listener on the Saturday morning.

Recruitment

Top of Page

Recruitment of new readers is usually by introduction from existing volunteers.  The FATN gets a very good flow of such introductions and as a result is well up to strength.

Initially prospective new readers attend an informal introductory and exploratory session with the programme director, where they have a chance to see and try out what is involved in the editing and reading process and to take part in a reading audition.

After a new reader is accepted and some time before their first live 'performance', they are required to attend a training session of about two hours when the many editing and reading processes are explained and discussed.

Presenters (team leaders) are appointed from within the ranks of readers as are the selected readers for the monthly magazine.
